On March 25th, the European Commission issued monitoring recommendations on furans and alkyl furans in food, which include: Member States should monitor furans, 2- methylfurans and 3- methylfurans in food, especially coffee, canned baby food (including infant food in containers, pipes and bags), ready-to-eat soup, potato chips, fruit juice, breakfast cereals, biscuits, biscuits and crackers, etc. In order to ensure the representativeness of samples, member States should follow the sampling procedures stipulated in Part B of Annex of Commission (EC) RegulationNo. EC)333/2007. Food operators should also adopt this sampling procedure or equivalent sampling procedure to ensure that the samples are representative; For the analysis of furan in foods other than coffee and canned baby food, member countries and food operators should use the method without matrix or spectral interference or the method that meets the requirements of these standards, and the limit of quantification (LOQ) should not be higher than 5 μ g/kg; Member countries and food operators should provide monitoring results to EFSA before June 30th every year according to EFSA's food and feed standard sample description (SSD) guidelines and other specific reporting requirements of EFSA. This regulation will come into force as of the date of publication in the Official Gazette of the European Union.
